Introduction

Venn diagrams allow children to sort data into two or three circles which overlap in the middle.   Guess My Rule gives our children the opportunity to explain their thinking and justify their reasoning.

GUESS MY RULE

1.  Some shapes belong in the circle, and some shapes do not. There is a rule to decide what belongs in the circle. What is that rule?

2.  Which shapes belong inside of the circle?  How do you know?

3.  Draw three more examples that belong outside the circle.

GUESS MY RULE

1.  Some shapes  belong in the red circle. Some shapes belong in the blue circle. Some shapes belong in both!

    • What is the same about all the shapes in the red circle? What is the rule to be in the red circle?

    • What is the same about all the shapes in the blue circle? What is the rule to be in the blue circle?

    • What is the same about all the shapes in the middle? What is the rule to be in both circles?

2. Which shape would go inside both circles? How do you know?

3. Draw a shape that belongs in only the red circle.

4. Draw another shape that belongs in only the blue circle
